How Small Businesses Can Use Foursquare to Increase Traffic

We’ve been following the rise in popularity of geolocation platforms and in particular, Foursquare a mobile app that incorporates GPS and gaming. Like Google’s new Buzz, Loopt, Gowalla and others, Foursquare allows smart-phone users through  to find local venues through GPS and leave helpful reviews. However, unlike other geolocation platforms, Foursquare has added the “Facebook factor” of fun, allowing the most loyal customer to claim the title of “mayor” of a location and thus redeem specials provided by the venue. Players can also “check-in” when they arrive at a location, letting their Foursquare friends see where they are adding an additional social element. That’s why I think Foursquare – for the moment – has the brightest future.

For example, if I happen to love a certain neighborhood restaurant, I can sign up on foursquare.com (for free) and enter that restaurant’s name and location (so GPS can find it). I can tell people what to order, when the best time of day is to visit, etc. Now, I and my fave location are in Foursquare’s system. Every time I visit the restaurant I can check-in – and GPS will confirm that I am, indeed, there – and, if I check in more than anyone, I am named “Mayor”. Depending on the restaurant, I might receive all kinds of “rewards” like a buy-one-get-one, or other discount. It’s fun for players and provides and excellent loyalty reward system for the venues.

How can small businesses – whether in or out of large cities – take advantage? Stay tuned…
